Man of La Mancha – a musical inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’ seventeenth century masterpiece Don Quixote. Man of La Mancha has become a classic musical theatre work, with countless revivals on Broadway and around the world, winner of five Tony Awards and boasting the Broadway hit song “The Impossible Dream”.
SYNOPSIS
In the late 16th century, Miguel de Cervantes (a tax collector, soldier, and author) and his assistant, Sancho, are thrown into prison by the Spanish Inquisition. While awaiting his trial, the prisoners steal Cervantes's possessions and commence a trial of their own.
Pleading his case, Cervantes gives a dramatic defense by reenacting the story of Don Quixote of La Mancha: the passionate and poignant tale of a noble knight who lives in a world of madness and chivalry.
His holy quest - a mission of salvation, to right all wrongs, to dream the impossible dream.
DIRECTOR’S NOTES
The production team and I are very excited to be presenting this stylish and classic production at the National Theatre – a theatre well suited for the production’s brooding and looming set and lighting. Although at times it may seem large in scale, Man of La Mancha is in fact an intimate, passionate and compelling story told with a strong book and beautiful (though demanding) score.
As the musical is written as a “play within a play”, we require versatile actor/singers willing to develop and embrace numerous characters, with the majority of the show spent on stage.
We require a cast of 18 to 20 (15-16 Male, 5-6 Female). With no chorus (in the traditional sense), all cast will have roles that double, with each role requiring strong acting and vocal skills. Some roles i.e. Aldonza, Padre, Don Quixote etc – can afford to have a more classical tone rather than a standard musical theatre vocal. For dialogue, actors need to use a neutral (to slight English) accent except where otherwise specified.
This is certainly an actor/singer’s dream show, with powerful and intriguing characters that range from the tour-de-force roles of Don Quixote and Aldonza to each and every member of the versatile and strong ensemble. Man of La Mancha is an ensemble piece of work in every sense of the word.
