Chicago puts the roar into the roaring 20’s –a lawless era of frenetic chaos and improbable drama. As the metaphor goes, this phenomenon presents like a three- ring circus; somewhat wild, engrossing as well as entertaining.
Our production brings together an atmosphere of desperation, crime committed through infidelity and corruption, and a desire to prosper in a world where things were not always what they appeared to be. It is diverse, original and innovative – full of dance, popular musical style, compelling characters and a visionary guise.
You will be able to hear the roar; feel the heat and smell the sweat through the 1920’s greasepaint. So, come along and audition to be part of this exciting production of CHICAGO.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN
Roxie Hart – Female. Vocal Part: Alto/Mezzo, F3-B4 Playing age 25 - 40
An innocent with the ability to murder; sexy; funny; actress should be a strong dancer with a big, first-rate Broadway belt voice. Roxie is not very bright and never thinks about the consequences of her actions before she says or does things. Every move is selfish, every idea foolish and ill-considered, and yet she remains strangely sympathetic because we know her selfishness is not malicious; but childish.
Velma Kelly – Female. Vocal Part: Alto/Mezzo, E3-D5 Playing age 25 - 45
Sarcastic, sexy, tough, funny. Velma is a former vaudeville performer who often breaks the fourth wall and addresses the audience directly to explain certain events within the show. She killed her husband and her sister after finding them together. Used to being the "headliner" she learns to hold her tongue and make nice to save her vaudeville career. Needs to be a strong actress, singer and dancer.
Billy Flynn – Male. Vocal Part: High Baritone, Bb2-G4 Playing age 30 - 55
Billy is an educated lawyer and in the past may have been sexy, persuasive and masculine. Billy is manipulative in order to make celebrities of his clients. Both Velma and Roxie hire Flynn to represent their cases and use him as their claim to fame. Billy will take any case as long as it is sure to put money in his pocket. Billy is a lot like a Hollywood Agent – he is now a downtrodden sleazy ‘has-been,” and not as influential as he would like to think. Should be a strong singer and move well.
Matron “Mama” Morton – Female. Vocal Part: Alto, F#3-Bb4 Playing age 30 - 55
The tough, sassy warden of the Cook County Jail, “Mama” treats the inmates under her watch like family and would do anything for them – so long as she gets something else in return. The total essence of corruption. A tough, funny and powerful actress with a strong belt voice.
Amos Hart – Male. Vocal Part: Baritone, C3-F#4 Playing age 25 - 45
Charming, funny, vulnerable, timid man. Amos is an average guy, not very good looking, not very smart. Manipulated easily, Amos is the only character in Chicago whose motives are entirely pure, never selfish and he's the only character who really loses ultimately. Strong character actor who can sing well.
Mary Sunshine – Male. Vocal Part: Soprano, Bb3-Bb5 (Falsetto) Playing age 25 - 50
A sappy, soppy tabloid columnist who relies more on emotion than thought when it comes to writing her stories, Mary Sunshine is a person who believes that no matter what horrible atrocities a person has committed, somehow there must be a little bit of good in them. This character is sometimes played by a person in drag. - Falsetto. Actor needs to be a good comedian and a great legit singer.
Emcee 1 & Emcee 2 (Masters of Ceremonies) – Gender non-specific Any age
Unique characters that appear throughout the show to introduce the various “acts” and “stages”. Existing outside the events of the play, the Emcees are onstage for almost the entire show – they appear everywhere and speak to the audience directly and often provide insight into the characters or situations. Must have a strong speaking ability and be able to command a strong stage presence. Will also double-up in ensemble work – should be strong dancers.
